The Garden
of the Ancients

In the large outdoor area behind the museum’s main building, there are several exhibits. “The Garden of the Ancients” is a collection of Island stones, all gathered on Vashon’s beaches by geologist extraordinaire and Vashon resident, Steve Bergman. The stones are divided into a dozen baskets according to type, and present an array of colors and textures, each with its own origin story, some involving red-hot volcanoes, others sand and mud at the bottom of the ocean, and nearly all brought to the Island by glaciers and water. Providing context are multiple illustrated panels describing the volcanic and glacial forces that for millions of years worked to shape the Puget Sound area and our Island, eventually leaving all those stones behind.

The
Native Plant Garden

Just beyond the “Garden of the Ancients” exhibit is a native plant garden. It encircles a small path and showcases several dozen plant species native to Vashon.

The
Roger Stanley
Hydro Boathouse

In 2023 Roger Stanley, who began the 4th of July hydro racing tradition on Vashon, donated his original home-built 1958 hydroplane to the museum. It is now on display in the specially built “Roger Stanley Hydro Boathouse” in the garden area behind the museum’s main buildings, along with information about the seven-decades-old race—its history, the boats, the winners, the record-breakers,
the controversies. This is an exhibit for both hydro lovers and history buffs.
