Festival Queens

July 2027 – October 2027

During the Strawberry Festival each year, Vashon Elects a "Mayor" as part of an effort to raise funds for local nonprofits and the chamber of commerce. This tradition had its origins in selecting a Festival Queen. In 1923, Miss Melissa Jaynes was crowned the first Strawberry Queen when she was 104 years old. Later, the selection of a queen was made as in a traditional beauty contest, with young women vying for the title. As Vashon has morphed and changed, so has this festival tradition. This exhibit will coincide with the Strawberry Festival.
